State Minister Khaleel highlights the priority areas for the Maldives during the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, at the General Debate

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel highlighted the priority areas for the Maldives during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, speaking during the General Debate today.

These priorities were identified as: equal representation in the multilateral system, addressing the climate crisis, the achievement of sustainable development through affordable financing, ensuring gender equality, promotion and protection of human rights and upholding the peace and security of the international fora.

State Minister Khaleel highlighted the negative impacts of climate change on Small Island Developing States like the Maldives, and the need to work together nationally and internationally to fight climate change, especially during the upcoming COP28. He reiterated the importance of concessional financing for developing countries. and called for the early adoption and use of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index.

The statement also underlined the work that has been carried out by the Maldives in addressing gender equality, such as the initiative by the Maldives delegation to establish the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, the active participation in the Human Rights Council and the ratification of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.

State Minister Khaleel concluded the statement by reiterating Maldives’ support for the State of Palestine and called for a sovereign and independent state established on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its Capital. He also noted the importance of countering terrorism and violent extremism in creating a peaceful and stable future.

The Maldives delegation to the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly is led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Khaleel. Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem and a delegation of Officials of the Ministry of Health, and a delegation from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology, also participated in various high level meetings held during the High Level week.
