It is an important milestone for the rapidly expanding relationship between the two countries and offers an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of Maldives - China relationship and consider new ideas and initiatives to strengthen, enrich and deepen both countries future engagements.

17th October 2012, Male';The Republic of the Maldives has called for the revamping of the Smooth Transition Process for the graduation of countries from Least Developed Country status while drawing attention to the vulnerabilities of island nations. Speaking in the Second Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations today, Ambassador Ahmed Sareer stated that though "Maldives had success in pioneering new measures to mitigate the effects of graduation ... the question of whether those efforts were enough has not been answered in the positive."

10 October 2012, Male'; Mohamed Faseen Rafiu of Maldives has won the SAARC Youth Award for the year 2011.

SAARC Youth Award is conferred to a winner among youth from SAARC Member States who contribute and give back to the society through various projects and initiatives. The 2011 Award was conferred upon Rafiu on the theme, ‘Youth Leadership in the Fight against Social Ills' after competing among 19 applicants from seven Member States of SAARC.

10 October 2012, Male'; The Government of Maldives notes the concerns raised in the statements issued by some of the development partners of the Maldives including the European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom. The Government also wishes to thank international partners for the continued support for strengthening the young democracy in the Maldives. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ms Dunya Maumoon noted on the occasion "the Government is fully committed strengthening democracy and rule of law in the Maldives". The Government also believes that the way forward is through dialogue and looks forward to the dialogue continuing within the Parliament towards a positive outcome, as agreed by all major political parties including the opposition MDP.
