12 March 2014, Male';The Government of Maldives welcomes the decision by the Peoples Majlis today to approve a new member to the Elections Commission (EC). The decision enables the EC to function with the legally required quorum and hold the general elections scheduled for 22 March 2014, consistent with the Supreme Court's verdict of 9 March. In compliance with the verdict, the Government proposed to the Majlis for consideration and to vote on the names of candidates to fill the remaining two vacant positions at the Elections Commission. The Government's unshakable commitment to the independence of the EC, and in particular, in holding the elections on schedule, is demonstrated by the fact that the names of the candidates were screened and proposed to the Majlis in accordance with the Supreme Court's verdict.

The Minister and the Secretary General discussed international issues of mutual interest including climate change and its particular impact on Small Island Developing States. The Secretary General welcomed the leadership role of the Maldives in this regard. As the head of Maldives delegation, the Minister will be delivering her statement at the High Level Segment on 3 March 2014 at 1350 hrs. The Minister is scheduled to meet with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Ms. Navi Pillay, United Nations Secretary General, Ban ki Moon, OIC Secretary General and other bilateral partners to discuss issues of mutual interest during the sidelines of the Session.
28 February 2014, Male'; The Crown Prince, Deputy Premier and the Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Royal Highness Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has arrived in the Maldives this afternoon.
