Maldives Calls on the Need for Long-Term and Broader Measures to Prevent Human Rights Violations

4 March 2014, Geneva; Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon delivered a statement at the High Level Dialogue on Promotion of Preventive Approaches within the United Nations System, held at the 25th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

In her statement, Minister Dunya called for establishment of appropriate mechanisms and enabling environments, to uproot the seeds of human rights violations altogether. Minister Dunya, in addition noted the importance of political will and resources to adopt relevant preventive policies, and develop effective strategies. She also noted the lack of funds and human rights experts in countries, like the Maldives, that cause a serious obstacle to the improvement of human rights conditions. Further, Minister Dunya identified democratic institution building, and human rights education as long-term and broader objectives of preventing human rights violations.

It is to be noted that, Maldives was part of the core-group that led the initiative calling for a high level dialogue under this theme, in September 2013.
