26 March 2012, Male';On Thursday, 22 March Lord Howell of Guildford, the Commonwealth Minister at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office briefed the House of Lords on the developments in the Maldives and responded to questions from the House of Lords.

26th March, Geneva; The Maldives has cosponsored a UN resolution condemning continued Israeli settlement activity in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The resolution, adopted with a vote at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, states that such activity violates the fundamental human rights of Palestinians, and also represents a barrier to a negotiated peace. The Council also adopted a resolution, cosponsored by the Maldives, reaffirming the Palestinian's right to self-determination, a universal right not yet granted to Palestinians because of Israeli objections.

23 March 2012, Geneva; The Maldives, Morocco and Mauritius today secured the establishment, by the Human Rights Council, of a new UN Trust Fund which will help Small Island States and Least Developed Countries to more effectively engage with and benefit from the international human rights system. The UN resolution establishing the Fund was adopted by consensus and with 111 cosponsors - a record number for a UN Human Rights Council resolution.

23 March 2012, Geneva;The UN Human Rights Council today adopted, by consensus and with over 80 cosponsors, a resolution creating new UN Special Procedure to clarify the human rights obligations pertaining to the enjoyment of a clean, healthy, safe and sustainable environment. The resolution was drafted, negotiated and tabled by the Maldives, Costa Rica and Switzerland.

21 March 2012, Male'; Sir Donald McKinnon, the Special Envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary-General, met with the His Excellency Dr. Abdul Samad Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs today. During the meeting, the Foreign Minister briefed Sir Don on the political developments in the country, and the measures that the government is taking to resolve the on-going political tensions in the country. The Special Envoy informed the Minister that the Commonwealth is willing to assist Maldives in strengthening the country's state institutions.

18 March 2012, Malé; The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Dunya Maumoon, responded today to the statement issued by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG). In her response the State Minister expressed the Government's disappointment at the unbalanced nature of the CMAG statement but also emphasised the Government's determination to continue to work with CMAG to bring calm to the political situation in the Maldives.

12 March 2012, Male';President Dr Mohamed Waheed urged the various institutions contributing to the renewable energy project in the Maldives, to work together to make it successful. The President made these remarks at the handing over ceremony for the Project for Clean Energy Promotion in Male', held today at Hiriyaa School.

12 March 2012, Male';A ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to sign the Exchange of Notes between the Government of the Maldives and the Government of Japan under which Japanese Government will provide the Maldivian Government, a Grant Aid of two hundred and fifty million Japanese Yen.

At the ceremony held this afternoon, the Exchange of Notes was signed by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H. E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon and Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives H. E. Mr. Nobuhito Hobo.

Speaking at the ceremony State Minister Dunya said the Grant Aid will be utilized to provide the Maldives with equipment towards the development of the country, especially in the health and education sectors. She also noted that the equipment will be products made in east Japan, where the tsunami and earthquake destroyed much of its facilities and livelihood of many people making this assistance remarkable.
