State Minister calls on President Rajapakse

19th March 2012, Male';The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Her Excellency Ms. Dunya Maumoon paid a courtesy call on the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka His Excellency Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse at the President's Office yesterday.



On an official visit to Sri Lanka from 18-19 March, the State Minister handed over a letter from President Waheed and briefed on current political situation in the Maldives. The State Minister also thanked President Rajapakse for his continued support to the Government of Maldives and the people of Sri Lanka for the long historic bond of friendship shared by the both countries.

At the meeting, President Mahinda Rajapakse welcomed and assured the State Minister, of the Government of Sri Lanka's full support to the Government of Maldives and committed to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. He also underscored the importance of committing to and engaging in national dialogue by all political actors to resolve the current political tension in the country. To this effect, the President expressed support to President Waheed's effort to bring calm and order and to establish a government of National Unity.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary to the President Mr. Lalith Weerathunga and His Excellency Mr. Hussain Shihab, High Commissioner of Maldives to Sri Lanka.
