14 June 2013, Geneva; The 23rd Session of the Human Rights Council concluded today with action being taken on all resolutions put before the Council for its deliberation. The Maldives during this session played an important role being a member of the Core Group as a main sponsor on the resolution on "Independence and Impartiality of the Judiciary and Lawyers", by extending its support to the mechanisms and special procedures of the Council and by supporting various initiatives aimed at promoting and protecting human rights.

10th June 2013, Male'; The Maldives has continued to engage actively on all human rights issues within the remits of the ongoing 23rd Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.Among the priorities this year, the Maldives welcomed the Report of the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Ms. Gabriella Knaul following her visit to the Maldives and expressed its hope for continued dialogue with the Council and its mechanisms. In its statement, the Maldives acknowledged that it faced structural deficiencies and resource constrains in addressing the issues raised in the report, and reiterated its commitment to acclimatize and implement the recommendations of the Special Rapporteur and requested the support of the international human rights mechanism and international partners in implementing them.

05 June 2013, Male'; President Dr Mohamed Waheed on Tuesday made a stopover visit to Jordan en route to Palestine. During his visit, President Waheed met with the King of Jordan Abdulla II and discussed bilateral relations between the two countries.

16 May 2013, New York; The United Nations General Assembly yesterday adopted a resolution expressing grave concerns over the continuing escalation of violence in Syria and condemning ongoing widespread and systematic gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The resolution entitled "The situation in the Syrian Arab Republic" was adopted by a vote of 107 in favour to 12 against, with 59 abstentions. The Maldives cosponsored the resolution and voted in favour of it.
