17 June 2013, Geneva; The Maldives yesterday addressed the 102nd International Labour Conference which is presently ongoing in Geneva, Switzerland from 5-22 June 2013.
In her statement, the Head of Maldives Delegation, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Iruthisham Adam expressed appreciation to the International Labour Organization (ILO) for the valuable support and expertise it has provided to the Government since it joined the organization in 2011. She also highlighted that the Maldives had now officially acceded to 8 core conventions of the ILO and that the Government is now well on the path to incorporate the rights enshrined in those core ILO conventions into domestic legislation
Ambassador Adam emphasized the important correlation between social development and environmental sustainability. In this regard, she stated that the Maldives remained committed to move towards creating greener jobs and expressed support to the deliberations on the post-2015 development framework within the ILO. While trafficking in persons has been a major problem for the Maldives, the Ambassador noted that it is currently working towards completing its accession to the relevant international legal framework governing transnational organized crime. Moreover, the Ambassador expressed the Maldives' commitment to working with the ILO on reforming national labour legislation to bring them in line with ILO standards, in protecting the rights of workers.
The Maldives delegation to the conference includes officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently accredited to the Permanent Mission in Geneva.
