The National Committee established for the implementation of the Post 2015 development Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) held its first meeting today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting was chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs Her Excellency Ms. Dunya Maumoon.

H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has sent a message of condolence to H.E. His Excellency Mr. Sameh Hassan Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Arab Republic of Egypt following the tragic news of the death of H.E Mr.  Hisham Barakat, Prosecutor General of the Arab Republic of Egypt, after his motorcade was hit by a bomb blast in Cairo yesterday.

Minister’s message reads as follows.

It was with much shock and sorrow that I received the tragic news of the death of H.E Mr.  Hisham Barakat, Prosecutor General of the Arab Republic of Egypt, after his motorcade was hit by a bomb blast in Cairo yesterday.

The Government and the People of Maldives condemn this act especially in this holy month of Ramadan in its strongest terms. The Maldives also stands firm in its commitment to fight against the global menace of terrorism and will continue to work closely with Egypt and the international community as a whole in eliminating the scourge of terrorism.

At this time of sorrow, I would like to take this opportunity to convey my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Your Excellency and the family of the deceased.

The Maldives expressed concern about the situation of children in the Gaza Strip and reiterated its steadfast solidarity with the Palestinian people. At a statement delivered today at the UN Human Rights Council  the Maldives further condemned the systematic violations of human rights perpetrated by the Israeli forces, and the indiscriminate shelling and rocket attacks by Israel.

The Government of Pakistan has donated USD 3,196,850.39, to the Government of Maldives, for the Male’ Water Crisis Management Fund, including for the purchase and transportation of water storage tanks; and for the repair and renovation of the Parliament building, which was pledged during the visit to Pakistan by H.E. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in May 2015.

The Maldives reiterated its commitment to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process and stated that its unique peer to peer assessment has helped many countries to improve their human rights records after the first cycle. The Maldives made the comments while speaking at the General Debate under Agenda item 6 at the UN Human Rights Council today.

Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Ms. Dunya Maumoon today met with the delegation from Amnesty International visiting the Maldives. During the meeting held at the Foreign Ministry, Minister Dunya stressed the importance for the organization to be fair and objective in assessing the situation of the Maldives. The Foreign Minister also raised concern on the recent conduct by Amnesty after they released a report containing false accusations and misinformation about the human rights situation in the Maldives.

In response to a number of statements that have emerged in relation to recent events in the Maldives, the Government considers its obligations towards legislative, constitutional and judicial reform as an integral part of its development plans and is proud of the many achievements that have already been secured in the space of just a few years. As Foreign Minister Dunya has noted “The general human rights situation in the Maldives has been improving steadily. This Government has enacted a total of 18 key human rights legislations within a period of less than 18 months, which is an unparalleled record in the history of the Maldives”.

21 June 2015; Ambassador Faisal invited Chinese investors to partner with Maldives in writing the next chapter of the Maldives Story. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Silk Road Economic Belt Cities International Forum held in Yiwu,  Ambassador Faisal noted that as an initiative coming out of a region with the most number of people, the One Belt One Road Initiative has the potential to harness the human and financial capital of the region to bring about measurable and positive change in the lives of billions of people.

17 June 2015, Saudi Delegation, headed His Excellency Ambassador Ahmed Hammad Alhamoud has called on His Excellency Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Foreign Secretary this afternoon.
