Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Ms. Dunya Maumoon today met with the delegation from Amnesty International visiting the Maldives. During the meeting held at the Foreign Ministry, Minister Dunya stressed the importance for the organization to be fair and objective in assessing the situation of the Maldives. The Foreign Minister also raised concern on the recent conduct by Amnesty after they released a report containing false accusations and misinformation about the human rights situation in the Maldives.
Minister Dunya further reiterated the importance of constructive engagement to avoid one sided reporting that would tarnish Maldives’ reputation without grounds and affect its stability, development and democratic progress. The Minister also reiterated the Government’s strong commitment to strengthen the independent institutions and uphold the rule of law and maintain stability in the country and underscored the need of Amnesty as an international human rights organization ought in establishing productive relationships with governments.
The Minister was accompanied by Additional Secretary Ms. Liusha Zahir and Director General Ms. Khadeeja Najeeha of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
