The Minister of Foreign Affairs H. E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon attended 2016 spring festival reception celebrating the Chinese New Year. At the function held at Hotel Jen, Foreign Minister Dunya addressed the function and conveyed warm greetings on behalf of His Excellency President Yameen Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and the People of Maldives to His Excellency President Xi Jinping and the friendly people of China on the occasion.

Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Ms Dunya Maumoon has arrived in Male’ after concluding her two-day official visit to Islamabad. During her visit, Minister Dunya paid a Courtesy Call on the Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Nawaz Sharif and delivered a message from the President H.E. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The Minister also met her counterpart, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Sartaj Aziz, as well as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Syed Tariq Fatemi.

The Working Group of the Universal Periodic Review concluded its 24th Session in Geneva this afternoon. Fourteen member states were reviewed at this session. - namely: Namibia, Niger, Mozambique, Estonia, Paraguay, Belgium, Denmark, Palau, Somalia, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Latvia, Sierra Leone and Singapore. The Maldives delivered statements and recommendations for seven countries. - Denmark, Palau, Somalia, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Sierra Leone and Singapore. The recommendations made by Maldives focused on a broad range of issues – gender equality, health, persons with disabilities, climate change, education, water, among other important human rights.

H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives has urged the Members of the UN Security Council to take stronger and meaningful actions to end conflict in Palestine and the Middle East. In his statement at the Security Council’s quarterly open debate, he also called upon Israel to take concrete actions towards ending its occupation and paving the way for a two state solution.
