Biography

Amin Javed Faizal, a career Foreign Service Officer, joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2007. As an Additional Secretary at the Ministry since 2017, and presently is the Head of the Asia, Middle East and Africa Department. Prior to this assignment, he served as the Head of the Multilateral Department (2017-2020).

In overseas assignments, he served as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Offices in Geneva (2013-2014). During this time, he represented the Maldives at the various sessions of the Human Rights Council, and its related mechanisms including the Universal Period Review (UPR). He has also represented the Maldives at the meetings of the World Health Organization (WHO), International Labour Organization (ILO), and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

He also served as Second Secretary, and later as Counsellor, at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations in New York (2009-2013), where he was assigned with portfolios relating to international peace and security, disarmament and non-proliferation, human rights and humanitarian affairs, amongst other multilateral issues. He represented the Maldives and participated in the regular sessions of the United Nations General Assembly from 2008 to 2012.

During his career in the Foreign Service, Javed Faizal has previously served as Head of Division for Commonwealth, OIC and Other International Organisations, United Nations Division, and as Head of Research Division at the Foreign Relations Department.

Javed Faizal also worked as a consultant for a non-profit organisation “Advocating the Rights of Children”, where he later also served as a Member of the Board of Directors. He also worked in the private sector from 2015 to 2017.

Javed Faizal has a keen interest in history and international relations and is also an avid musician. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wales Swansea, United Kingdom.
