Biography

His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel began his foreign service career in 1981 when he was posted as Third Secretary at the High Commission of Maldives in Sri Lanka; prior to which he served six months at the Department of Immigration and Emigration of the Government of Maldives. Upon serving two years at the High Commission, he briefly joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being posted again as Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations, where he served four years.

Throughout his long tenure in foreign service His Excellency Khaleel has risen through the diplomatic ranks as a result of his immense positive contribution to the Foreign Service of the Maldives. Prior to being posted as the First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations in August 1994, he had worked at the Foreign Relations Department, Department of External Resources and the Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During this period, he completed Oxford University Foreign Service Programme, Foreign Service Training Programme in Pakistan and mastered in Japanese language at the Japan Foundation in Kitaurawa, Japan.

His Excellency Khaleel has continued to serve his country by promoting foreign policy interests of the Maldives both abroad and at home. Since joining the Permanent Mission in August 1994, His Excellency Khaleel has ascended in the diplomatic ranks of the Mission and was appointed the Permanent
Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations on 03 December 2007.
He diligently fulfilled the duties of this post until 09 December 2009 on which he was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Maldives to Japan. He was also appointed as the Non-Resident Ambassador of the Maldives to the Republic of Korea on 18 April 2013. His Excellency Khaleel continued to serve as the Ambassador to Japan and Non- Resident Ambassador
to the Republic of Korea until 30 September 2016.

On 3 October 2016, His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel was appointed as the Secretary, Bilateral of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As Secretary, Bilateral, His Excellency Khaleel was instrumental in shaping the Maldives overall bilateral engagement with its partners and contributed to shaping and conducting the
foreign policy of the Maldives.

His Excellency Khaleel was appointed as the Minsiter of State for Foreign Affairs, on 22 November 2018 by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
