The Permanent Representative of Maldives to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Iruthisham Adam was elected as the Second Vice President of the 34th Session of the IMO General Assembly. The election took place at the opening of the Assembly at IMO Headquarters in London on 24 November 2025.

 

This is a historic milestone for the Maldives, symbolizing the country’s strengthened voice and growing recognition in global maritime governance. Following the election Permanent Representative Iruthisham Adam expressed gratitude to the IMO Secretary-General and Member States for their confidence in the Maldives. She highlighted the Maldives’ growing and constructive role in international maritime affairs. She also expressed the Maldives’ readiness to work with all Member States to strengthen maritime safety, protect the marine environment, and build capacity, with particular focus on supporting fellow Small Island Developing States.

 

The International Maritime Organization, established on 17 March 1948, is a United Nations specialized agency, responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. It aims to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted, and universally implemented. At present, IMO has 176 Member States and 3 Associate Members. The Maldives became a member of IMO on 31 May 1967.

 

The Maldives delegation at the Assembly is led by the Minister of State for Transport and Civil Aviation, Captain Abdul Latheef Mohamed, and included Permanent Representative Iruthisham Adam, Deputy High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to the United Kingdom, Mohamed Ahmed, Chief Operations Officer of Maldives Ports Limited, Hassan Muzni Mohamed, First Secretary Sara Ahmed Khalid, and Second Secretary Fathimath Zeyna Abdulla Saeed of the High Commission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Kingdom.
