Maldives Reaffirms Support for Universal Human Rights and Strengthened Global Engagement at the 61st Sessions High-Level Segment of the Human Rights Council (HRC61)

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, delivered the Maldives national statement at the General Debate of the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, today.

In his statement, Minister Dr. Khaleel reaffirmed the Maldives’ strong commitment to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stressing its continued relevance in today’s global context. He recalled its core idea that all people are “born free and equal in dignity and rights,” emphasizing the collective duty of the international community to uphold these universal values.

He underscored the importance of strengthened multilateral cooperation in advancing human rights, especially amid emerging global challenges. The Minister highlighted the need to preserve the credibility and impartiality of the international human rights system through constructive dialogue and principled engagement.

Minister Dr. Khaleel also outlined the Maldives’ ongoing national efforts to reinforce democratic governance, strengthen the rule of law, and enhance institutional accountability. He highlighted recent progress in anti-corruption initiatives, support for vulnerable and marginalized groups including women entrepreneurs, persons with disabilities, and children—and improvements in social services. He further noted the Maldives’ constructive engagement with international mechanisms, including the completion of its fourth Universal Periodic Review, and continued advocacy for the meaningful participation of Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in the Council’s work.

Minister Dr. Khaleel formally announced the Maldives’ candidature for election to the Human Rights Council for the term 2028–2030, reaffirming the country’s commitment to contributing constructively to the Council’s mandate.

Concluding his statement, Minister Khaleel called upon the Council to maintain credible standards, ensure inclusive processes, and deliver impactful outcomes. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to the universality, indivisibility, and interdependence of all human rights, as well as to advancing human dignity both nationally and internationally.
