The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, participated in the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) today in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The meeting was convened to address the recent developments following Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland as an independent state.
In his remarks, Minister Dr. Khaleel expressed the Maldives' profound concern at Israel’s actions, underscoring that recognition of Somaliland constitutes a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia and stands in direct contravention of the Charter of the United Nations. He stressed that such conduct undermines established international norms.
Highlighting the broader geopolitical context, Minister Dr Khaleel noted that the actions by Israel are taking place at a time when the region is burdened by conflict, especially in Palestine. He expressed concern for Israel’s actions during the ongoing ceasefire in Gaza as Israel continues to demonstrate disregard for international law. In addition, he emphasised that the erosion of international law creates a dangerous precedent for other small states like the Maldives that rely on a rules-based international order for the protection of sovereignty and independence.
The Organization of the Islamic Cooperation, comprising 57 Member States, remains a strong advocate for the Palestinian cause and addresses the challenges faced by the Muslim Ummah. The Maldives has been an active member of the OIC since becoming a member in 1976.
