Statement by the Government of Maldives on spreading false and unsubstantiated information

The Government of Maldives is deeply concerned that a letter allegedly from the Minister of External Affairs of India, Dr. Jaishankar, addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, is circulating on social media and has been published in some online newspapers.

The Ministry categorically states that the contents of this alleged letter in circulation are totally fabricated and unsubstantiated. Further, the Ministry strongly and unequivocally condemns this devious and cowardly act of fabrication and false allegations in the alleged letter. It is particularly concerning that the timing of this malicious act is aimed at misguiding public perception regarding our strategic bilateral partnership with India, and purports to affect the outcome of the upcoming presidential election.

While championing the fundamental right to freedom of expression, the Government of Maldives strongly urges all media personnel to refrain from spreading false information and act more responsibly in line with journalistic standards and ethics accepted internationally as best practice.
