The Vice President makes pledges from the Maldives at the Pledging Tree session of the high-level event "Human Rights 75"
On Monday, Vice President H.E. Hussain Mohamed Latheef delivered a statement of pledges on behalf of the Government of Maldives, at the Pledging Tree session of the high-level event "Human Rights 75" held in Geneva.
The Maldives made five pledges at the event. The Vice President reiterated the current government’s commitment to strengthen efforts in capacity building to cultivate a culture of human rights in the Maldives.
As a newly established government, he also pledged to continue efforts to strengthen the domestic normative framework, aligning it with international obligations, improving the Maldives’ treaty reporting capabilities, and constructively engaging with international human rights mechanisms.
The Vice President additionally delivered the pledge to encourage equal participation of women and girls in all aspects of political and public life. He also pledged to fortify efforts to improve the implementation of national child protection mechanisms and enable access to inclusive education.
In the final pledge, he stated that the human rights of Maldivians were closely linked to climate change, therefore pledging to enhance climate resilience to protect the Maldivian way of life and their future.
At the event organised by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, more than 100 countries are making pledges, as part of a campaign to encourage meaningful actions by Member States.
The Vice President is on an official visit to participate in the high-level event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Human Rights 75) in Geneva, Switzerland, from December 11–12, 2023.
