The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives presents Letter of Credence to Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Huda Ali Shareef presented her Letter of Credence to the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP Her Excellency Armida Salsiah Alisjhabana, today at a ceremony held at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok, Thailand. 

During the ceremony, Permanent Representative Huda Ali Shareef reaffirmed the Government of Maldives’ strong commitment to regional cooperation and multilateral engagement. She emphasised the Maldives’ commitment to actively participate in ESCAP’s initiatives, particularly in areas such as sustainable development, climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth. 

The Executive Secretary of UNESCAP Alisjhabana welcomed the Permanent Representative’s appointment and reiterated ESCAP’s continued support for the Maldives in advancing its national development priorities and accelerating progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 

UNESCAP brings together 53 Member States in the Asia-Pacific region to address development challenges through regional cooperation. As one of the five United Nations regional commissions, UNESCAP provides knowledge-based solutions, technical assistance, and capacity-building support to help countries achieve their national goals and commitments under the 2030 Agenda. The Maldives has been a member of UNESCAP since 1971. Permanent Representative Huda Ali Shareef was the first Permanent Representative of the Maldives to be appointed to UNESCAP.

Permanent Representative Huda Ali Shareef was accompanied at the presentation ceremony by Counsellor Ms. Shajna Ibrahim Iqbal and Second Secretary, Ms. Siyana Shiyam of the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives to the Kingdom of Thailand.
