The Maldives signs four Bilateral MoUs with the Kingdom of Bahrain

The Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain have concluded four bilateral Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) of cooperation, during the ongoing State Visit of President His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the Kingdom of Bahrain. The MoUs were signed during a special ceremony held at Qudaibiya Palace, in the presence of His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa.

On behalf of the Government of Maldives, Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Abdulla Shahid signed the “Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain on Political Consultations” “Memorandum of understanding Between the government of the kingdom of Bahrain and the Government of the Republic of Maldives on Climate change” and the “Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation between the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives and the Mohammed Bin Mubarak Al Khalifa Academy for Diplomatic Studies of the Kingdom of Bahrain on Diplomatic Training and Exchange of Information and Documentation.”.

Minister of Youth and Sports His Excellency Ahmed Mahloof signed the ‘Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain on cooperation in the area of Youth and Sports Development’.

An MoU between the Government of the Republic Maldives, Bahrain Telecommunications Company B.S.C (Batelco.) and Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun P.L.C (Dhiraagu), in the area of Cyber Security will also be signed during the visit. On behalf of the Government of Maldives, Minister of Finance His Excellency Ibrahim Ameer will sign the MoU.

In a joint Press Conference held by Minister Shahid and his counterpart, His Excellency Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain this afternoon in Manama, Minister Shahid highlighted that the conclusion of the four MoUs demonstrates the shared commitment of the leaderships of the Maldives and Bahrain to further elevate the long-standing relationship between the two countries.

Minister Shahid also stressed the importance of on-going discussions on concluding a Visa Waiver Agreement between the Maldives and Bahrain, which once concluded will allow Maldivians to travel to Bahrain without obtaining a visa prior to travel. Minister Shahid highlighted that such an MoU, in addition to easier travel, will also facilitate commerce and increase people-to-people contact.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is undertaking a State Visit to Bahrain at the invitation of the King of Bahrain, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

The Government of Maldives established diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Bahrain on 24 March 1980.
