The Maldives has ratified the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (CED) by depositing the instrument of ratification at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The Convention, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20 December 2006, is one of the nine core international human rights treaties. CED came into effect on 23 December 2010, placing an obligation for States to prevent, prohibit and criminalize the offence of enforced disappearance as a grave human rights violation.
With this step forward, the Maldives becomes party to eight core international human rights treaties, marking the commitment of the Government to uphold human rights in both the domestic and international sphere.
The Maldives signed the CED on 6 February 2007. Of the 98 countries that have signed the Convention, 72 have ratified it thus far.
