The Maldives Marks 60 Years of Membership in the United Nations

The Maldives today proudly commemorates 60 years of membership in the United Nations, reflecting six decades of active engagement with the international community. Since joining the United Nations on 21 September 1965, the Maldives has championed multilateralism, peace, and international cooperation, while advocating for the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The Maldives has advanced critical global issues, including climate change, sustainable development, human rights, and the protection of small states. Over the years, the UN has supported the Maldives through technical assistance, capacity-building programmes, and in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Maldives’ contributions within the UN stand as enduring legacies of its leadership. These include serving multiple terms on the Human Rights Council, holding the Presidency of the 76th Session of the General Assembly, and leading landmark initiatives such as the establishment of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, the establishment Voluntary Technical Assistance Trust Fund to support the participation of LDCs and SIDS in the works of the UN Human Rights Council, the support to graduating Least Developed Countries, the protection of Small States, and the establishment of the right to a clean, healthy, sustainable environment. 

As the Maldives celebrates this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to the principles of the UN Charter. The Maldives looks forward to continuing its active engagement within the UN, amplifying the voices of small states, and supporting a more just, resilient, and sustainable world.
