The Maldives calls on the United Nations to admit the State of Palestine as a full member

Ref: 2024/PR/80

The Maldives has called the United Nations Security Council to support the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member state of the United Nations. The Maldives rendered its support during a statement delivered today by Principal Secretary to the President on Foreign Relations Mohamed Naseer at the United Nations Security Council Quarterly Open Debate on the situation in the Middle East.

During the statement, Principal Secretary Naseer called on the members of the United Nations; especially the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council to give their full and unconditional support for the admission of the State of Palestine to the United Nations as a full member state.  The Maldives also called on the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions, including an arms embargo on Israel for violating the Charter of the Council on multiple occasions.

The Maldives reiterated its support for a lasting solution to the conflict, through a two-state solution, with the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Quarterly Open Debate on the Situation in the Middle East is being convened during the Presidency of Malta in the United Nations Security Council. On 2 April 2024, the State of Palestine submitted a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations requesting renewed consideration be given to the application of the State of Palestine for membership in the United Nations.
