8th October 2025, Geneva, Switzerland.

The 60th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council concluded in Geneva today.

During the session, the Council adopted 35 resolutions, two draft decisions, and one president statement, as well as appointed a Special Procedures mandate holder and elected seven members to the Advisory Committee of the Human Rights Council. These outcomes covered a broad range of thematic and country-specific issues. The Maldives maintained an active presence throughout the session, delivering national statements across key thematic areas and co-sponsoring several resolutions, aligning with key government priorities.

The Maldives served as a member of the cross-regional core group for the resolution on “The Role of Prevention in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights: The Rule of Law and Accountability.” This resolution underscores the central role of prevention in promoting and protecting human rights and reaffirms that States bear the primary responsibility for upholding and safeguarding all human rights, including addressing violations and abuses. It was adopted by consensus, with 55 co-sponsors at the time of adoption. Furthermore, the Maldives, together with the core group, also led the resolution on “Sea-Level Rise and Its Effects on the Full and Effective Enjoyment of Human Rights,” which was likewise adopted by consensus.

In addition, the Maldives co-sponsored several resolutions addressing key human rights issues, including the right to safe drinking water and sanitation, the rights of older persons, the promotion and protection of the rights of women and children in conflict and post-conflict situations, and the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. These co-sponsorships reflect the Maldives’ continued commitment to advancing human rights, social justice, and sustainable development at the international level.

The Maldives also co-sponsored joint statements delivered on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Representing the Informal Group of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the Maldives delivered joint statements emphasizing the interlinkages between human rights, climate action, and environmental protection, while underscoring the human right to water and sanitation and the need for enhanced technical and financial assistance to strengthen the capacity and participation of SIDS in the Council’s work.

The Maldives delegation for the 60th Session of the Human Rights Council was led by Her Excellency Dr. Salma Rasheed, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva. The delegation included Counsellor Mr. Adam Hamid, Counsellor Uza. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Ms. Aisthath Rayahyn, Third Secretary Ms. Faiha Ahmed Firag, and Attaché Mr. Raaidh Saeedh from the Permanent Mission. As the Vice President of the Human Rights Council, representing the Asia Pacific Group, Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed chaired several meetings of the Council.
