Maldives to participate in the 58th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council

 The 58th Session of the UN Human Rights Council commenced today in Geneva, Switzerland. The session opened with the High-Level Segment to be held from 24th February 2025 to 26th February 2025 followed by the General Segment, which will continue from 27th February 2025 to 4th April 2025.

His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs will address the Human Rights Council today. In his statement, Minister Khaleel will brief the council on the progress made by the Government of Maldives, under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the promotion and protection of human rights. In his address, Minister Khaleel will also highlight the engagements of the government with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Procedures Mandate-holders. Moreover, Minister Khaleel will reaffirm the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to human rights and justice and advocate for equality and inclusion, particularly for Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in the work of the Council. 

As part of his engagements, Minister Khaleel will deliver a keynote address at a high-level side event organised by the Permanent Mission of Maldives together with the Core Group on the Right to a Healthy Environment. The event, titled ‘Advancing the Universal Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment: Taking Stock and What Next?’, will be held on 24th February 2025. Additionally, he will participate in two panel discussions organised by the Permanent Mission of Slovenia and the Permanent Mission of Estonia on the sidelines of the High-Level Segment.

In line with the Government’s key policies and priorities, the Maldives delegation will deliver national statements under several agenda items during the General Segment. Furthermore, the Maldives, in partnership with the Core Group on the Right to a Healthy Environment, will present a resolution on the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, with a particular focus on oceans and human rights. Additionally, Maldives alongside the Core Group on women in diplomacy will introduce a resolution on “Women, diplomacy and Human Rights” during this session.

The Maldives delegation for the High-Level Segment of the 58th Session of the Human Rights Council will be led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Abdulla Khaleel. The delegation will also include Her Excellency Dr. Salma Rasheed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Offices at Geneva, Ms. Mariyam Midhfa Naeem, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Adam Hamid, Counsellor of the Maldives Mission to the United Nations Offices at Geneva,  Ms. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Counsellor of the Maldives Mission to the United Nations Offices at Geneva, Ms. Aishath Rayahyn, Second Secretary of the Maldives Mission to the United Nations Offices at Geneva, Mr. Amr Danyal Shamun, Chief General Service Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Fathin Shoora Haleem, Third Secretary of the Maldives Mission to the United Nations Offices at Geneva, and Mr. Mohamed Raaidh Saeedh, Attaché of the Maldives Mission to the United Nations Offices at Geneva.
