Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel addressed the United Nations Security Council High-Level Open Debate on Artificial Intelligence and International Peace and Security, held today.
The debate, convened under the Presidency of the Republic of Korea, focused on the complexities, multifaceted impacts, and responsible use of artificial intelligence in the maintenance of international peace and security.
The Minister underscored that artificial intelligence represents a shift in the global power equation where computing capacity can empower even the smallest of nations and noted that artificial intelligence holds immense potential to advance climate resilience, education, health care, and economic diversification; while also warning of the risks of misuse, including surveillance, repression, and the acceleration of armed conflict.
The Minister also emphasized that for Small Island Developing States, artificial intelligence is not an abstract option but a vital tool for survival and prosperity. Citing the Maldives national digital transformation strategy, Maldives 2.0, he reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to placing people at the centre of innovation and development.
He concluded by urging Member States to ensure that artificial intelligence serves as a force for peace, equity, and human dignity.
