Maldives and Botswana establish diplomatic relations

The Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Botswana have formally established diplomatic relations today. The Joint Communiqué formalising diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives by Her Excellency Dr. Hala Hameed, Secretary, Bilateral of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and on behalf of the Government of Botswana by Honourable Dr. Lemogang Kwape, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Botswana, in a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Botswana to the United Nations, in New York.

Establishing enduring relationships with countries who believe in mutual respect and peaceful co-existence is a key priority of the Maldives’ foreign policy. The establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Botswana paves the way for the two countries to cooperate further to achieve common goals in areas of common interest.

Botswana is a landlocked country situated in Southern Africa, with a population of approximately 2.6 million.

The Republic of Botswana is the 186th country to establish diplomatic relations with the Maldives.
