Handover Ceremony of the Chairs Used during the Signing of the Maldives’ Independence Agreement

A ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today to receive the chairs used during the Signing of the Maldives’ Independence Agreement on 26 July 1965. 

The handover was formally conducted by His Excellency Nicholas David Low, High Commissioner of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Maldives, and was received on behalf of the Government of Maldives by His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, in the presence of His Excellency Adam Naseer Ibrahim, Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage.

In his remarks, Minister Dr. Khaleel highlighted the symbolic importance of the chairs, noting that they represent the moment the Maldives took its first steps as a sovereign nation. He expressed deep appreciation to the Government of the United Kingdom for this meaningful gesture, which reflects the historical longstanding friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and the United Kingdom.

High Commissioner Nicholas Low conveyed the United Kingdom’s continued commitment to strengthening Maldives–UK relations, highlighting the shared history and ongoing partnership across various sectors.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of staff of British High Commission attended the ceremony.
