Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel spoke at the side event co-hosted by Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) and Robert Bosch Stiftung titled “Rising Seas, Rising Risks: How to respond to the multidimensional security challenges posed by sea level rise” held today in Munich, Germany. The event took place on the sidelines of the 62nd Munich Security Conference, taking place from 13 to 15 February 2026.
Minister Dr. Khaleel emphasized that while climate change is a worldwide issue, its impacts are uneven, with small island nations like the Maldives facing severe risks. Despite contributing minimal emissions, the Maldives is already experiencing rising sea levels, and extreme weather events.
Minister also outlined the Maldives’ efforts to build climate resilience, including the development of Rasmalé - an elevated safe city designed to withstand sea-level rise - and investments in infrastructure. He also stressed that adaptation alone cannot address the global threats associated with climate change, and called for concrete action backed by strong political will.
In conclusion, Minister Dr. Khaleel reaffirmed Maldives commitment to the cause, stating that global solidarity is essential to protect climate-vulnerable nations and ensure a secure, sustainable future.
