Throughout history, migration has been a way for individuals to seek better lives. As we observe the International Migrants Day with the theme ‘Safe Migration in a World on the Move’, the international community needs to collectively improve how the issue on human mobility can be governed by responding to the biggest migrant crises the world has seen.

The Maldives has been working in promoting safe and orderly migration by cooperating and collaborating with state institutions and international partners. We remain focused, and support a holistic approach to the important issues of governance of migration in all its aspects.

The Maldives has adopted legislations, and regulations to strengthen our institutions in addressing the issues of smuggling of migrants, trafficking in person, protection and assistance to migrants and trafficked victims. As a Small Island Developing State surrounded by the ocean, we remain concerned about the impact of climate change, natural and human made disasters on human mobility and migration. Likewise, we were proud to support the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants which was adopted in New York in 2016.
