Japan provides Grant Assistance for the Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Network Development Project

The Government of Japan provided a grant aid of an additional 326 Million Japanese Yen (approximately 3.5 million USD) for the Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Network Development Project. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Moosa Zameer and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Her Excellency Takeuchi Midori signed the Exchange of Notes relating to the grant aid, at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.

The Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Project (DTTB) holds immense importance for Maldives. The project aims to improve information accessibility and bridge disparities among islands in the Maldives. The project’s impact is expected to be far reaching, not only bolstering communication infrastructure but also resilience against climate change and disasters. The additional funding will enable the continuation of the project's original scope, contributing significantly to its successful realisation.

Minister Zameer expressed gratitude for Japan’s continued support and emphasised the importance of this collaboration in advancing socio-economic development in the Maldives. Minister Zameer also highlighted the important role played by Japan as one of the key development partner and reiterated Maldives’ commitment to further strengthen the existing relations.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Public Service Media, Communication Authority of Maldives, Maldives Broadcasting Commission, Maldives Meteorological Service, National Disaster Management Authority, the officials from the Embassy of Japan and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
