Statement by the Government of Maldives on the Israeli bombing of tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in Rafah

Ref: 2024/Statement/18

The Government of Maldives condemns, in the strongest of terms, the continuous military aggression by Israeli forces against unarmed civilians in the Gaza Strip, the latest of which includes the bombardment of tents in Rafah City in which hundreds of displaced Palestinians were taking shelter.

Such deliberate aggression and genocidal acts targeted against civilians are in gross violation of international humanitarian law, and the Government of Maldives calls on Israel to abide by the emergency ruling of the International Court of Justice, delivered on 24 May 2024, to immediately halt its offensive in Rafah, as well as the Court’s previous decisions calling on Israel to “take all measures within its power” to prevent death, destruction and any acts of genocide in Gaza.

The Government and the people of the Maldives remain in firm solidarity with the people of Palestine and reiterate unwavering support for Palestine’s legitimate right to statehood through the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
