Newly appointed UNICEF Representative to the Maldives paid an introductory call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs
Ms. Marjan Montazemi, the newly appointed UNICEF Representative to the Maldives paid an introductory call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid today.
During the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Montazemi presented her Letter of Appointment to the Minister. Minister Shahid and the Representative discussed the role of UNICEF in the Maldives, especially with regard to children’s issues, climate change and disaster risk reduction, education, health, nutrition and social inclusion. They also discussed on ways to further strengthen the cooperation between the Government of Maldives and UNICEF in support of children, youth and women.
Their discussion also focused on the economic and social recovery efforts that are currently underway in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Foreign Minister Shahid thanked the UNICEF for the generous assistance provided to the Maldives during the pandemic. He took special note of the support provided to the education and health sector of the Maldives.
UNICEF has been an active contributor to the social development of the Maldives. They established their Office in the Maldives in 1978.
