UN High Commissioner for Human Rights pays a courtesy call on Foreign Minister

23rd November 2011, Male'; UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Her Excellency Ms. Navanethem Pillay paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Naseem at the Ministry today.



At the meeting, Minister Naseem highlighted increasingly active role the Maldives was playing in the Human Rights Council and noted that the first historic visit by the Human Rights High Commissioner to the Maldives was symbolic of the important strides Maldives had made in advancing and protecting human rights in the Maldives.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs His Excellency Mr. Aslam Shakir, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Hawla Ahmed Didi, Permanent Representative of Maldives to UN Offices in Geneva, Her Excellency Ms. Iruthisham Adam and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During her visit (22-24 November 2011), the High Commissioner met with President Mohamed Nasheed and other senior government representatives, with members of the Opposition, with judges and lawyers and with NGOs. She also delivered a keynote address to the People's Majlis on the challenge of promoting human rights in the context of a democratic transition, and visited the drug rehabilitation center.
