06th May 2013, Male'; The Assistant Secretary General (ASG) for Political Affairs of the United Nations Mr. Oscar Fernandez-Taranco arrived in the Maldives this afternoon, on a three-day official visit.
The ASG was welcomed at the airport by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ms. Dunya Maumoon and the UN Resident Coordinator in the Maldives Mr. Tony Lisle.
During his stay in the Maldives the Assistant Secretary General is scheduled to interact with local political stakeholders. To this effect he is scheduled to meet with His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Waheed, key Ministers, Speaker of the Majlis, Elections Commission and political parties.In his meetings Mr. Taranco is expected to share information and exchange ideas on how best the United Nations could provide assistance to the upcoming Presidential elections.He will begin his meetings with a call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs tomorrow morning.
Mr. Taranco's visit forms part of the ongoing engagement between the Government and the United Nations. Under this engagement the ASG has visited the Maldives twice previously.ial change, and to achieve effective progress".
