UK Welcomes Progress in the Maldives

13th June 2012, Male'; The UK's Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt has issued a statement welcoming the Maldives Government's decision to reform the composition of the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI), including by accepting an individual nominated by former President Nasheed.



In the statement, issued by the Foreign Office, Mr. Burt said welcomed "this important step forward for Maldives".

"I hope that both sides will now build on this spirit of compromise and co-operation to ensure that the Commission delivers an independent and credible investigation of the circumstances surrounding the 7 February transfer of power".

Commenting, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Dunya Maumoon,

said: "The Government's decision to seek compromise and a middle ground on the crucial question of the CoNI has been widely welcomed both inside and outside the Maldives. The outcome of the Inquiry will form a vital part of our efforts to bring stablity and to heal divisions".
