The Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Maritime Organization presents Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of the IMO
The Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Dr. Farahanaz Faizal, presented her Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Mr. Kitack Lim, in an official ceremony held at the Headquarters of IMO today. High Commissioner Dr. Farahanz Faizal is the first Permanent Representative of the Maldives to be accredited to the IMO since the Maldives became a Member State of the organization in 1967.
At the ceremony, High Commissioner Dr. Farahanaz Faizal thanked Secretary-General Kitack Lim for the warm welcome, and conveyed compliments from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. She reiterated the Government of Maldives’ commitment towards closer engagement with the IMO in a number of areas, including the safe, fair and effective regulating of shipping as well as the reduction of pollution from ships, in line with internationally agreed regulations and standards.
The President of the Republic of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, appointed High Commissioner Dr. Farahanaz Faizal, as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Maritime Organization on 5 April 2021, following approval by the People’s Majlis of the Republic of Maldives on 2 March 2021.
Established on 17 March 1948, the International Maritime Organization is a United Nations specialized agency, responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. It aims to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented. At present, IMO has 174 Member States and 3 Associate Members. The Maldives joined IMO on 31 May 1967.
