The Permanent Representative of Maldives to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) presents credentials to the Director General of IRENA

The Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Ambassador Aminath Shabeena, today presented her Letter of Credence to the Director-General of IRENA, Mr. Francesco La Camera in an official ceremony held at the Headquarters of IRENA in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Ambassador Shabeena succeeds High Commissioner Dr. Hussain Niyaaz to become the second Permanent Representative of Maldives to IRENA. She was officially designated as the Permanent Representative of Maldives to IRENA on 31 March 2021.

At the ceremony, Ambassador Shabeena thanked Director-General Mr. Francesco La Camera for the assistance provided by IRENA to the Maldives to date, and conveyed compliments from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid. She reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Maldives in working towards transitioning to sustainable energy forms and reassured to further strengthen cooperation with IRENA to help the Maldives achieve its Nationally Determined Contribution of reaching net-zero emissions by 2030.

The International Renewable Energy Agency is an intergovernmental organization that was officially established in 2009. At present, IRENA comprises of 164 Member States. The Maldives has been an active member of IRENA since its formation, including in the capacity of Vice Chair of the Assembly of IRENA, following the elections in 2013. In October 2017, the inaugural meeting of the Renewable Island Energy (IRIE) was also held in the Maldives.
