06 June 2014, Geneva, Switzerland; Speaking during the 103rd Session of the International Labour Conference, Permanent Representative of the Maldives/Ambassador, Her Excellency Ms. Iruthisham Adam reaffirmed the government's commitment to end all acts of forced labour in Maldives.
Ambassador Adam stated that an Anti-Human Trafficking Act has been enacted in December 2013 in this regard, which makes trafficking of persons a criminal offence, including all types of forced labour and fraudulent recruitment. Ambassador Adam also informed of the government's commitment towards reforming its national labour regulations in line with the ILO standards to ensure that the rights of migrant worker population and also of the local workers is better protected.
Ambassador Adam further thanked the International Labour Organisation for its continued technical support to strengthen relevant institutions and protecting labour rights in the Maldives.
The 103rd session of the International Labour Organisation began on 28 May 2014 and will continue till 12 July 2014. A tripartite delegation consisting of government, employer and worker delegates are participating in the session from the Maldives.
