24 July 2012, Male';Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, H. E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon has condemned the killing of Lance Corporal Adam Haleem of the Maldives Police Service. The late Lance Corporal Adam Haleem was stabbed while reporting for duty at Kaashidhoo Police Station in Male' Atoll Kaashidhoo.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry today, State Minister extended her condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the Ministry and her own self. She said that such brutal attacks on law enforcing officers are totally intolerable and that the Government will not give room for such attacks to continue. State Minister Dunya further reiterated that individuals who carry out such acts of brutality, and those who encourage and incite such acts, will be brought to justice. She also noted that there are some politicians who are trying to instill hatred among people towards law enforcing institutions in the country.
She also highlighted on two recent statements brought out by Commonwealth Special Envoy, Sir Donald McKinnon and Spokesperson of EU High Representative, the Right Honourable Baroness Katherine Ashton regarding their concerns towards the political situation of the Maldives. She said that Maldives shares the same concerns regarding the political situation in the country and the Government of Maldives is dedicated towards finding a peaceful resolution to the current political situation. State Minister Dunya also noted that police had not used and heavy handed tactics in handling the demonstrations and praised their professionalism and work to protect Maldivian citizens.
