Secretary, Bilateral, Dr Hala Hameed delivers remarks

The Secretary, Bilateral, Dr Hala Hameed, today delivered remarks at a special assembly held in Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani School, in the island of Gan in Laamu Atoll to commemorate Commonwealth Day. During the special assembly, a school student hoisted the Commonwealth Flag for Peace to mark the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter.

In her remarks, she noted how proud Maldives is to rejoin the Commonwealth, an organization that embraces the rich diversity, friendship, democratic values and sustainable development. She further highlighted the key benefits of Commonwealth membership, including capacity building opportunities and being a voice for Small Island Developing States on issues such as climate change.

The school will also host a walk to mark the Commonwealth Day this evening. For the Commonwealth Day celebrations, Secretary, Bilateral, Dr Hala Hameed is accompanied by Joint Secretary Khadheeja Najeeha and Chief General Service Officer Aishath Rifga Mohamed.

Commonwealth Day is celebrated every year on the second Monday of March. The Commonwealth Flag for Peace initiative was launched by the Commonwealth to mark the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Maldives rejoined Commonwealth on 1 February 2020.
