23 December 2013, Male'; Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary. The appointment was made by President Yameen Abdul Gayoom yesterday.
Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed is a career diplomat who joined the Foreign Service in May 1985. He rose through the ranks and held various posts in the Ministry including the Director-General in charge of foreign relations, and Assistance Director General in charge of external resources. As a junior officer he also served at the Maldives High Commission in Colombo.
Prior to his appointment as Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer served as the Additional Secretary in charge of Policy Planning. During his tenure he focused on building the capacity of the Maldivian Foreign Service and headed the technical team in reinforcing Maldives' interests abroad.
Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed holds a PhD in the Study of Diplomacy from the Australian National University; M.A. in Diplomatic Studies (with distinction) from the University of Leicester, UK; and Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Sydney, Australia.
Ms. Fathimath Inaya was also appointed by the President yesterday, as the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Ms. Inaya commenced her diplomatic career in 1996 and has served at various positions in the Ministry including Assistant Director for SAARC and Foreign Relations. During her career her main area of charge has been bilateral relations and has served as Director and Deputy Additional Secretary for foreign relations. She has also been instrumental in promoting Maldives' multilateral agenda and headed the Ministry's team in charge of Global Affairs.
Prior to her appointment as Deputy Minister she served as Joint Secretary in charge of bilateral relations during which time she headed the department in promoting Maldives' interests with its bilateral partners and taking the Ministry's strategic priorities forward.
Ms Inaya holds a Masters in International Studies from the University of Sydney and a Bachelors Degree in Development Studies and Asian Studies from the Flinders University of Australia.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Her Excellency Ms. Dunya Maumoon conveyed her felicitations to both officials for their appointments.
