"NAM should continue to enhance solidarity, to unite to deliver peace and prosperity for all" Foreign Secretary

28 May 2014; Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed has called on the Non-Aligned Movement to be "a source of support for encouraging democracies", and "a source of courage for the weakest and the smallest" nations in the international system. The Foreign Secretary made these calls at his statement delivered last night at the 17th NAM Conference held in Algiers, Algeria.

On his statement, the Foreign Secretary also said that in the contemporary would politics, it is not the size that matters, but "good ideas, and smart ideas, and the ability of nations to transform, to adapt, and to accommodate to changing dynamics".

The Foreign Secretary recalled some of the important initiatives that the Maldives has successfully launched in the international arena, including its efforts in drawing the world's attention to climate change, the security of small states, and human dimension of climate change. The Foreign Secretary said that the Maldives has been successful in these initiatives "not because of its purchasing power parity, but because of its ability to advocate new ideas in addressing common challenges".

The Foreign Secretary is heading the Maldives delegation at the Ministerial Conference, which commenced in Algiers yesterday. He is accompanied by Ms Nizwee Rasheed, Assistant Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
