During the meeting, the Minister acknowledged the close relationship between the Pacific SIDS and the Maldives
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid today, held a virtual interaction with the Permanent Representatives of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (P-SIDS) at the United Nations. The meeting was organized by the Permanent Mission of the Maldives in New York. Ambassadors and representatives from twelve P-SIDS took part in the meeting.
During the meeting, the Minister acknowledged the close relationship between the Pacific SIDS and the Maldives. The Minister and the Permanent Representatives exchanged information about the impact of the evolving situation of COVID-19 on the Small Island Developing States, and shared experiences of addressing the impacts.
Key issues of importance to Pacific SIDS and the Maldives, such as sustainable development, climate change, the ocean, financing for development, and addressing the special vulnerabilities of SIDS, were also discussed. Minister Shahid thanked the representatives of the PSIDS for the continuous work they do to raise the profile of these issues at the United Nations and around the world. The Minister also highlighted the importance of working together to enhance the multilateral system and international cooperation.
