The Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid today, held a virtual interaction with the Permanent Representatives of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) at the United Nations. Permanent Representatives and representatives from a number of CARICOM countries took part in the meeting.
During the meeting, the Minister highlighted the many similarities and the shared interests between the CARICOM and the Maldives. The Minister and the Permanent Representatives further exchanged information about the impact of the evolving situation of Covid19 on the Small Island Developing States, and shared experiences of addressing the impacts.
Key issues of importance to the CARICOM and the Maldives, such as sustainable development, climate change, the ocean, access to financing, and sustainable recovery from Covid19, were also discussed. Minister Shahid thanked the representatives of the CARICOM for their close partnership with the Maldives over the years, and their advocacy efforts towards raising the profile of these issues at the United Nations and around the world. The Minister also highlighted the importance of working together to enhance the multilateral system and international cooperation.
