The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Ahmed Khaleel, and the Minister of State for South and Central Asia, UN and the Commonwealth, and Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict of the United Kingdom Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, held bilateral talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, today.

During the meeting held this morning, State Minister Khaleel welcomed Lord Ahmad to the Ministry and reiterated Maldives commitment to working closely with the United Kingdom on issues of mutual interests for both countries. Both State Minister Khaleel and Lord Ahmad further discussed avenues of cooperation in the areas of higher education, counter-terrorism, defence, environment and climate change, tourism and fisheries including eliminating tariffs for Maldivian Tuna exports to the United Kingdom. Both State Ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to enhance cooperation in the international arena, especially through the Commonwealth.

Lord Ahmad will make courtesy calls on the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, President Mohamed Nasheed and also attend the Official Opening Ceremony of the British High Commission in Male’ later today.

The State Minister was accompanied at the meeting by Foreign Secretary, Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Secretary Multilateral Dr. Hala Hameed and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
