Message by Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Abdulla Shahid on the Occasion of the 40th Fisherman’s day

The Government accords the highest priority to advancing this crucial sector in the Maldives

On the occasion of this year’s Fisherman’s day, we would like to congratulate the very skilled and diligent fisherman across the nation and reiterate the importance of practicing environmentally friendly and sustainable fisheries in the Maldives.

As we commemorate this joyous occasion, we also take note of the several impediments and challenges faced by Maldivian fisherman, especially due to the ongoing pandemic. It is of utmost importance for us to continue working on resolving the current and ongoing challenges in the fisheries sector by securing fair value for fish products and enabling access for Maldivian fish in European, Russian, Middle-eastern and Asian markets . Strengthening and expanding our fisheries sector is indeed an integral part of the Government’s resiliency and recovery efforts and directly linked to the livelihood of all Maldivians.

The Government accords the highest priority to advancing this crucial sector in the Maldives. Therefore, we reaffirm our commitment in working towards increasing access for the very best and highest-quality Maldivian tuna caught in the most environment friendly way, to markets everywhere.
