Message by His Excellency Moosa Zameer, Minister of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of Commonwealth Day

Ref: 2024/PR/61

“On this year’s Commonwealth Day, we join all Member States to celebrate the spirit of unity that brings us together as a family. This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Commonwealth – a commitment that embraces diversity. A commitment that has triumphed over trial. A commitment that has delivered results.

What makes us great are our common values, our common interests, and our resolve to rise to common challenges. These strengths are a proven path to a Commonwealth that, above all, perseveres. It has led us to a more prosperous and sustainable future.

Yet, common challenges, such as climate change, financing gaps, digital divide, and gender inequality remain. These forces have tested the most vulnerable among us. It has pushed Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives further away from achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Addressing these challenges require solution-based approaches, partnerships, and a united effort. This is what the Commonwealth has been all about. It unites us in the face of threats. It voices our concerns and needs. It empowers the most vulnerable.

Guided by the Commonwealth Charter, and in the lead up to and beyond the Commonwealth Heads of the Government Meeting 2024, the Maldives is committed to unite for a resilient common future.

Happy Commonwealth Day!”
