Message by Foreign Minister Shahid on the occasion of Commonwealth Day

The Maldives celebrates this year’s Commonwealth Day, as a member of the Commonwealth family once again.

The Maldives celebrates this year’s Commonwealth Day, as a member of the Commonwealth family once again. On this special occasion, the Maldives reaffirms its conviction and commitment towards Commonwealth Charter. This document binds us together through its core political principles and values.

The Commonwealth has been like a family for the people of the Maldives and it has championed the cause of small island states. Over the years, the Maldives has benefitted immensely through its engagement with the Commonwealth in various fields. The Commonwealth has stood by us throughout good and difficult times, making it a reliable and valued international partner.

Our students look forward to the educational opportunities, our athletes look forward to competing in the Commonwealth Games, and our people look forward to sharing of experiences and building relationships with the 2.4 billion Commonwealth citizens. The Maldives stands ready, once again, to play an active role within the Commonwealth in fulfilling our collective responsibility towards preserving the planet through combating climate change, promoting gender equality, empowering young people, increasing trade and investment, and strengthening governance.

The Maldives is glad to be part of the Commonwealth family once again, and looks forward to working closely with fellow Member States and the Commonwealth Secretariat to deliver a common future for all our people.
