Maldives Welcomes Lifting of State of Emergency in Sri Lanka

25th August 2011, Male :- The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Naseeem, today warmly welcomed the announcement made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka that Sri Lanka will not extend the state of emergency, as announced in a speech made to parliament.

"Sri Lanka is a long-standing democracy with a strong human rights tradition" said the Minister. "The Civil War was a traumatic experience for the country, a time when the Government was forced to take steps - like declaring a state of emergency - in order to protect lives".

"Now the war is over, Sri Lanka has an opportunity to build anew. Today's announcement is indicative of the Government's determination to put human rights at the centre of its national development. It is an extremely important step and I hope and trust that this will be recognized by the international community".

"For our part, the Maldives will continue to support Sri Lanka, our close friend and neighbour, and to work together to promote and protect human rights in both our countries".
